Job description

The postdoctoral position is part of the EXCITE Network (www.excite-network.eu) and is embedded in close collaboration with MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen.
The project focuses on the development and application of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) methods in computational mineral and materials science, particularly in the context of fluid–rock interactions.

This research contributes to an improved understanding of processes that are fundamental to carbon storage, energy transformation, and marine geochemical cycles.

Project Description

The goal of this project is to develop and apply innovative ML methods, particularly multi-modal learning and physics-informed machine learning (PINNs), to investigate reactivity processes between fluids and rocks across multiple scales.

The project combines experimental imaging data (e.g., 3D microscopy, ?CT, VSI, spectroscopy, time-resolved microscopy) with physics-based reactive transport models to explore the controlling mechanisms of fluid–mineral reactions.

Key Responsibilities

? Develop and implement AI approaches for the integration of multimodal microscopy, imaging, and simulation data.
? Apply physics-informed ML to link image data with physical models of reactive transport processes.
? Apply the developed methods to datasets on fluid–rock interactions in the oceanic crust, in collaboration with research groups at MARUM.
? Analyze how ML-based models can improve predictions of reactivity and pore-space evolution in, for example, oceanic basalts and related systems.
? Present results at international conferences and within the EXCITE network.

The project will contribute to the digital characterization and modeling of fluid–mineral systems in marine and geological contexts, providing novel AI-driven tools for predicting geochemical reaction processes.

Requirements

  • Completed academic university degree (Master’s or university Diploma) in a relevant field, e.g. Geosciences, Materials Science, Physics, Computer Science, Computational Science, or related disciplines, and a relevant doctoral degree (PhD).
  • Applicants who are in the final phase of their doctoral studies will also be considered. Please note that submission of the doctoral certificate is mandatory for employment.
  • Completed doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant field such as Geosciences, Materials Science, Physics, Computer Science, Computational Science, or related disciplines.
  • Solid knowledge of machine learning, data analysis, and scientific programming (e.g., Python, PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Julia).
  • Experience in image processing, numerical modeling, or simulation of reactive processes is an advantage.
  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary research at the interface between AI, geoscience, materials research, and marine environmental science.
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills and ability to work effectively in an international, collaborative environment.
