Dr. Mandy Boehnke

Vice President for International Affairs, Academic Qualification, and Diversity

Since September 2022, Mandy Boehnke has served as Vice President for International Affairs, Academic Development, and Diversity at the University of Bremen. A particular focus of her work is on networking with regional and international partner institutions, especially within the framework of the Northwest Alliance, the European university alliance YUFE - Young Universities for the Future of Europe, and YERUN (Young European Research Universities Network)– a network of young European research universities that are jointly addressing the global challenges of our time. Since 2024, she has also been a member of the Executive Board of the DAAD, where she advocates for the internationalization of German universities and the promotion of research and educational cooperation. In 2026, Mandy Boehnke was also appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board, which is co-authoring the “Federal Report on Researchers in the Early Stages of Their Careers” (BuWiK) for 2028. In this role, she will contribute to the further development of personnel structures at German universities.

Prior to her time in university management, Mandy Boehnke has held various positions at the University of Bremen and was a member of different committees, including the Academic Senate. From 2021 to 2022, she served as Dean of Studies in the Department of Social Sciences. From 2010 to 2022, she held the position of Director of Studies at the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS), where she played a key role in designing and developing the structured doctoral program and successfully defended it under the Excellence Initiative. She continues to be actively involved in supervising doctoral students, most recently primarily within the framework of the Research Training Group “Social Dynamics of the Self.”

Her career has been marked by international study and research stays and interdisciplinary collaboration. Mandy Boehnke studied sociology at Chemnitz University of Technology and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. During her dissertation on cross-national comparative family behavior and gender role attitudes, she spent a year at the National University of Singapore. Her diverse experience in research, teaching, and university management forms the foundation for her current strategic work at the University of Bremen.
