What does de-registration mean?
De-registration means that your studies at the University of Bremen have ended. From this point on, you are no longer enrolled as a student.
Why is this important?
Upon de-registration, you will receive proof of de-registration for the purposes of statutory pension insurance. If you have statutory health insurance, your health insurance provider will be informed of your de-registration. The date of your exmatriculation is crucial in determining how long you can use university services such as email, PABO, or the library.
In short: De-registration is the final step that formally ends your studies at the University of Bremen. You can apply for de-registration yourself, but there are also reasons for de-registration ex officio, i.e., without an application being submitted by students.
How does de-registration happen?
De-registration at your own request
You submit a request for withdrawal, stating the reason and the date on which you wish to withdraw (retroactive withdrawal is not possible). You will then receive your certificate of withdrawal and a certificate for the purposes of statutory pension insurance from the Student Office.
These will be made available to you immediately after processing (also for future de-registrations) and can be accessed exclusively via moin.
Please note that an application for de-registration may have implications for health insurance or payments of child benefit, BAf?G, etc.
De-registration without application
Upon completion of your studies
Once you have successfully passed all of your exams and completed your studies, your examination office will inform the Student Office. You will then be de-registered at the end of the current semester (March 31/September 30) in which the Student Office received this exam notification. You will receive a certificate of de-registration and a certificate for the purposes of statutory pension insurance. You can access these exclusively via moin. If you need the certificate of de-registration urgently, please submit a request for de-registration yourself.
Due to a final failure in an examination
The Student Office will receive notification of a final failure in an examination from your examination office. You will then be de-registered by the Student Office at the end of the semester (March 31/September 30) in which the Student Office received this examination notification. You will receive a notice of de-registration, a certificate of de-registration, and a certificate for the purposes of statutory pension insurance. You can access these exclusively via moin. If you urgently need the certificate of de-registration, please submit an application for de-registration yourself.
Due to failure to re-register
You do not re-register by the deadline (February 15/August 15). You will receive a reminder and if you still do not re-register by the deadline, you will be de-registered and will receive a de-registration notice, a de-registration certificate, and a certificate for the purposes of statutory pension insurance. You can access these exclusively via moin.
Responsibility
The Student Office is responsible for all de-registration procedures. Only the Student Office handles de-registrations and informs students accordingly.
You will always be informed about your de-registration by email to your university account. We therefore recommend that you actively use your university account or forward it to another email account.
All de-registration documents will be made available to you exclusively via moin. They will not be sent by post.
Difference between a notice of de-registration and a certificate of de-registration
The notice of de-registration triggers the de-registration process and is only issued if the de-registration takes place without an application being submitted – ex officio.
A certificate of de-registration is issued after every de-registration and formally certifies that the de-registration has taken place. Therefore, you will not receive a notice of exmatriculation if you request exmatriculation yourself or upon completion of your studies.
Can I do anything to prevent my de-registration?
In principle, you can appeal against a notice of exmatriculation. An appeal must be lodged in the proper form and within the specified time limit. Please refer to the information on legal remedies contained in the notice.
Your appeal will be reviewed by the Student Office upon receipt and, if necessary, forwarded to the Legal Department of the University of Bremen for final processing.
What happens after de-registration?
After you have de-registered, you can continue to use your university account for 18 months with limited permissions (e.g., no VPN). After 18 months, your data will be deleted. You will receive three emails in advance informing you that your account will be blocked and deleted. To continue using your university account, you can become a member of the alumni association.
While you are still enrolled as a student, you can have your ID card extended for one year at the SuUB. This will allow you to continue using the library's on-site services for another year despite your de-registration. However, once you have de-registered, you will no longer be able to use the services associated with the VPN. Among other things, it will no longer be possible to access certain literature databases from home.
Even if you have already de-registered from the University of Bremen, exam results from the previous semester will be entered into PABO. You can access exam results and transcripts of records via PABO for up to 18 months after your de-registration.
I will soon complete my bachelor's degree at the University of Bremen and would like to pursue a master's degree at the University of Bremen. How long should I remain enrolled in the bachelor's program?
In principle, you remain enrolled in the bachelor's program until the end of the semester in which your last exam was taken and the exam results were entered into PABO.
If you are not sure that all the CPs required to complete your bachelor's degree can be entered in PABO by the end of the semester, you should re-register for your bachelor's program by August 15/February 15. This way, you will not lose your student status if you submit your bachelor's degree at the beginning of the first master's semester and no later than two weeks after the start of the course. If you cannot provide proof of your bachelor's degree two weeks after the start of the course, you will remain enrolled in the bachelor's program at the University of Bremen.
I will soon complete my bachelor's degree at the University of Bremen and would like to pursue a master's degree at another university. How long should I remain enrolled in the bachelor's program?
The conditions relevant to your admission to a master's program at another university are determined by the admitting universities. Therefore, please inquire with the admitting university.
Normally, you will be de-registered at the end of the semester in which you passed the last examination of your degree program. The respective examination office enters the result in PABO and notifies the Student Secretariat (SfS) of the completion of your degree. After this notification, the SfS will de-register you at the end of the semester. If you start at another university, e.g., in the winter semester, you will usually remain enrolled at the University of Bremen until September 30 and will then be enrolled at the new university from October 1. According to the Bremen Higher Education Act, simultaneous enrollment at two universities is not possible.
If the host university requires a certificate of de-registration, it is advisable to apply for the certificate of de-registration at an early stage. Please note that you can also apply for de-registration at a future date. For enrollment in a master's program at other universities, complete transcripts of records are often expected. Even if you have already de-registered from the University of Bremen, exam results from the previous semester will be entered into PABO. You can access exam results and transcripts (Transcript of Records) via PABO for up to 18 months after your de-registration.
Impact & Refund
In the event of de-registration, a pro-rata refund may be possible. You can find information on our website Re-registration and semester fees.
