40 Years of Partnership with Dickinson College: College President Visits Bremen

For 40 years, Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and the University of Bremen have been partners. To mark this occasion, Dickinson College President John E. Jones III visited Bremen.

"I am so pleased to be here to honor our 40-year partnership with this innovative university. Despite the rhetoric you may hear coming from the United States, Dickinson remains firmly committed to the importance of global education, both in bringing international students to our campus in Carlisle, PA, and sending our students out to prestigious partner universities such as the University of Bremen. The power of our strategic alignment is manifest and creates a synergy that allows us to both engage and change the world," said Jones during the Dickinson College Public Lecture, which took place on Tuesday evening at the Schütting in Bremen. The event was hosted by the University of Bremen, the William G. and Elke Durden Dickinson Bremen Program at Dickinson College, the Carl Schurz German-American Club, and the Amerikazentrum Hamburg.

Opening remarks were given by Jason Chue, Consul General at the US Consulate General in Hamburg, and Professor Jutta Günther, President of the University of Bremen. "We are very happy to celebrate our 40th anniversary with Dickinson College here in Bremen. Student exchange is so much more than taking classes in another language and at another place. The ‘William G. and Elke Durden Dickinson Bremen Program’ – that is what the exchange program is called – is not only about learning, it is about connecting, understanding, and growing together," stated President Günther.

During his visit, Jones met with Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte and the University Executive Board, researchers from the university, and alumni of the German-American exchange program. Over the past forty years, several hundred students have spent one or two semesters at the other university. There are also numerous collaborations in research and teaching.
