    Applicants with a German degree:

    - Your average grade is shown on your certificate of examination or transcript of records: will be accepted
    - Your average grade is not shown: Arithmetic average (unweighted) will be calculated: sum of grades divided by number of grades

  • 10. Do I need an APS certificate?

The APS certificate must be available at the time of application for the summer semester 2026.. Applications cannot be reviewed without an APS certificate and will be rejected.

  • 11. What is a hardship application?

Study places reserved for cases of hardship (5% of study places) are allocated upon online application to applicants for whom non-admission to a restricted-admission degree program would constitute exceptional hardship.

A hardship application must be submitted via moin independently of the master's application and will be processed exclusively by the Student Office. The selection committee will not be informed.

Therefore, please ensure that your online application for the master's program does not contain any references to your separate hardship application.

The hardship application must be submitted online by the end of the respective application deadline. Hardship applications and supporting documents submitted in paper form cannot be considered.

Please note that the admission requirements for the respective master's program must also be met when submitting a hardship application.

If you are applying for a degree program with no admission restrictions, there is no need to submit an application, as sufficient capacity is available.

Further information on hardship applications can be found on our website.

Only after the selection committee has reviewed and assessed all applications will the notifications be made available in moin. You will receive an email notification as soon as your notification is available.

Notifications will only be provided in moin and will not be sent by post.

Please note that due to the high number of applications, the review process may take several weeks/months.

  • 15. What do the status notifications for my application in moin mean?

    - ?Ablehnung (keine Kapazit?t)“/"Rejection (no capacity)": Your application meets the admission requirements for the desired master's program. However, there were not enough study places available. Your application will automatically be included in a possible waiting list procedure.

You will receive a rejection letter explaining the reasons for this decision, which will be made available to you in moin, and you will be informed by email.

  • 17. I have received admission – what do I need to do next?

Enrollment in the Master's program offered is completed by

    - paying the semester fee by the deadline,
    - submitting the acceptance of the study place (please note: only valid with original signature),
    - submitting the documents required in the letter of acceptance.

The deadline for payment of the semester fee in order to accept the study place offered is stated in the conditional confirmation of enrollment or admission letter.

If payment is not made by the deadline, you will lose your study place.

  • 18. How can I submit my documents for enrollment?

Your documents must be submitted in paper form to the Student Office by the deadline. Please do not submit originals, only copies. Proof of authenticity is not required.

Documents that are not issued in German or English must be officially translated by a translator sworn in for courts and notaries in Germany and submitted.

Please submit your documents in a single bundle. You can either hand them in at our reception desk or send them by post to our address:

    University of Bremen
    Student Office
    Bibliothekstr. 1
    28359 Bremen.

Submissions by email cannot be accepted.

Please note: If the documents are not received by the Student Office by the deadline, you will lose your study place and will no longer be able to enroll.

Note on submitting documents for enrollment:

Please note that you are responsible for all shipping costs. Customs fees may also apply to shipments from abroad. Therefore, please check with the company you have commissioned in advance to find out whether additional fees may apply.

The University of Bremen cannot cover any costs incurred.

  • 19. How and when will the checklist be used?

In moin, you will see a checklist in your application overview. This will only become active once you have been admitted.

In the checklist, you can see at any time which documents have already been received and which are missing, have been translated incorrectly, or have not been submitted in full.

As soon as we have processed an entry in your checklist, you will receive an email with the relevant information.

Since the check mark in the checklist is not set automatically, it may take a few days for any incoming payments or electronic notifications from your health insurance company to be manually checked off in your checklist.

  • 20. How do I prove that I have the required language level?

All required language skills can only be proven with a language certificate. On the website of the Language Center Bremen, you will find an overview of all language certificates that are recognized by the University of Bremen as proof of the respective language.

But there are some exceptions where we don't need you to send us a language certificate:

    - Proof of German language proficiency:

German language proficiency level C1 can be demonstrated by a German school qualification or a bachelor's degree obtained in German.

    - Proof of English language proficiency:

You can prove English language proficiency levels A1, A2, and B1 through the German Abitur/Fachabitur.

The English language level B2 can only be proven via the German Abitur/Fachabitur if the certificate of examination explicitly states the level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). If the CEFR classification is not indicated on your Abitur/Fachabitur you can ask your school for a subsequent confirmation, which you must submit together with your Abitur/Fachabitur diploma as proof.

The English language level B2/C1 can be proven with a school qualification/completed bachelor's degree where the language of instruction was 100% English. A confirmation from your school/university with a “Medium of Instruction” letter is sufficient and we do not require a language certificate.

    - Proof of other language levels:

Proof of language skills beyond the duration of German Abitur classes is only possible for levels A1 to B1.

An overview of the required duration of classes can be found on the website of the Language Center Bremen.

  • 21. How do I provide proof of health insurance?

If you are admitted, you must provide proof of health insurance coverage in order to enroll.

    - Are you already insured with a German statutory health insurance provider?
Then ask them to send us your insurance details electronically.

    - Are you insured through a private health insurance provider, over 30 years of age, or have health insurance in the EU?
Please contact a German statutory health insurance provider of your choice and ask them to check your insurance status. If you have sufficient insurance coverage, we will be notified electronically.

    - You entered Germany from outside the EU?
You can take out insurance through a German statutory or private health insurance provider. However, your insurance status must be verified by a German statutory health insurance provider and sent to us electronically.

The University of Bremen's university number for the electronic transmission of health insurance data is: H0002687.

  • 22. Which translations are accepted?

    - Documents issued in German or English will be accepted.

    - Documents issued in a language other than German or English must be translated into German by a sworn translation agency in Germany for courts and notaries.

    - Documents translated into German abroad that have been confirmed by a German diplomatic mission (embassy/consulate) or by a sworn translation agency in Germany will be accepted.

  • 23. When will I receive my semester documents?

The semester documents will be issued and sent to your German address once you have submitted all the necessary documents and paid the semester fee by the deadline.

If you do not yet have a German address at the time of enrollment, you will receive the documents as soon as you can provide proof of a German address. You can change your address via moin. Once you have submitted an application for a change of address in moin, you will receive your documents within one week.

You can access your enrollment certificate online in moin once you have enrolled.

The digital Germany semester ticket will be sent to you exclusively as a link via email.

  • 24. What fees are incurred during the course of study?

In order to accept the study place offered, the semester fee must be paid by the deadline specified in the letter of admission.

After enrollment, the semester fee must be paid each semester for re-registration for the new semester. The payment deadlines, the amount of the fee, and information on the services included in the fee can be found on our website.

Please note that in addition to the semester fees, there are also living expenses to consider. On our website, you will find information about the cost of living in Bremen and everything you need to know about financing your studies and scholarships.

  • 25. I will arrive after the lectures have started; who should I contact?

If you are unable to arrive in Germany before the start of the semester (e.g., due to visa problems), please contact the Academic Advisory Office of the respective master's program directly to inquire whether this is possible. There you can apply for an attestation for later start to the program.

However, you must enter the country during the first semester of your enrollment in order to be able to start your studies at a later date.

Please note that even if you start your studies at a later date, you must still submit all documents required for enrollment correctly and on time. Starting your studies at a later date does not entitle you to submit your documents after the deadline.
