The Journal of Chemical Education has a tradition spanning more than a hundred years, and as such is both one of the oldest and most internationally prestigious journals for chemistry education. Published by the American Chemical Society, the journal has honored up to two deserving academics in chemistry education with an online Festschrift tribute each year since 2021. The current edition presents this honor to Ingo Eilks, who is both the first European researcher as well as the youngest person to receive such a tribute so far.
The publication signifies Eilks’ legacy in various areas, such as his practical strategies for creating engaging chemistry classes in a way that showcases the social dimension of chemistry, and his contributions to teacher education and developing a deeper understanding of how students learn and comprehend chemistry course content. Professor Ozcan Gulacar from the University of California, Davis wrote the Festschrift tribute.
Ingo Eilks has been a professor of chemistry education in the University of Bremen’s Faculty of Biology and Chemistry since 2004. He has also held an adjunct professorship for natural sciences education at the Faculty of Mathematics and Science of the Universitas Negeri Malang in Java, Indonesia since 2023. Eilks has authored over 700 publications in the course of his academic career, including articles, books, textbooks, teaching guides, and curriculum materials. He has published with researchers from over 25 countries, mentored hundreds of teacher education students, and has supervised more than 20 doctoral researchers from all over the world, including Jordan, Syria, China, and Indonesia.
