Job description

MARUM (www.marum.de) produces fundamental scientific knowledge about the role of the ocean and the ocean floor in the total Earth sys?tem. The dynamics of the ocean and the ocean floor significantly impact the entire Earth system through the interaction of geological, physical, biological and chemical processes. These influence both the climate and the global carbon cycle, and create unique biological systems. MARUM is committed to fundamental and unbiased research in the interests of society and the marine environment, and in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. It publishes its quality-assured scientific data and makes it publicly available. MARUM informs the public about new discoveries in the marine environment and provides practical knowledge through its dialogue with society. MARUM cooperates with commercial and industrial partners in accordance with its goal of protecting the marine environment.

We are looking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher who wants to join our project: “SOSEM: South Santos Seismic and modelling experiment: analyzing rift-plume interaction during break-up”. The project aims to investigate the factors that resulted in contrasting rifting and magmatic styles in the Santos and Pelotas basin. To this end, we are acquiring wide-angle seismic data along three lines in the southern Santos area in November 2025. This data will reveal the rate of change of magmatism along the strike of the Pelotas-Santos basins, the crustal nature of the southern Santos basin and the Santos Plateau and the contrast in crustal structure across the proto-Rio Grande fracture zone. The results will be used to model numerically the interaction between rifting and melting under the influence of the Tristan plume. The postdoctoral researcher will be integrated in the Geophysics and Geodynamics group, whose main research focus is to understand the processes of continental extension and seafloor spreading by using geophysical data and numerical model.

Your tasks

  • To support the logistical organization of the SOSEM seismic campaign.
  • To process and model seismic wide-angle data acquired during the SOSEM campaign.
  • To numerically model the effect of the pre-existing lithospheric structure on the magmatic evolution of the Pelotas and Santos basin, using 2-D geodynamic code, Rift2ridge.
  • To publish papers related to the SOSEM project.
  • Presentation of the results at international conferences.

Requirements

  • A completed academic university degree (Master/University Diploma) in Geosciences or related field
  • A completed doctoral degree in topics related to rifted margin evolution, seafloor spreading or related fields.
  • Proven experience in modelling of wide-angle seismic data.
  • Some experience in scientific programming (MATLAB, Python, Julia, C++)
  • Readiness to participate in ship expeditions
  • Applicants should have excellent English language skills and enjoy working in an international and interdisciplinary team.

General Information

Our offer:

  • Annual special payment (‘Christmas bonus’), regular salary increases in line with collective agreements and additional public service pension scheme (VBL)
  • A crisis-proof, interesting and varied workplace in a cosmopolitan university
  • 30 days' holiday per calendar year
  • A diverse, future-oriented and open corporate culture
  • Support from a collegial, motivated team with a positive working atmosphere
  • Individual training
  • The opportunity for further education and training
  • Compatibility of family and career through flexible working hours (flexitime) and the option of mobile working (subject to the general conditions)
  • Free social and family counselling services
  • Active company health management including the option of discounts at local sports clubs or for gyms and swimming pools (EGYM WELLPASS)
  • The option of using a job ticket for local public transport
  • Numerous sports and cultural activities
  • Varied catering options in the student union canteens

Open to unconventional approaches in research and teaching, the University of Bremen has retained its character as a place of short distances for people and ideas since its founding in 1971. With a broad spectrum of subjects, we combine exceptional performance and innovative potential. As an ambitious research university, we stand for research-based learning approaches and a pronounced interdisciplinary orientation. We actively pursue scientific cooperation in a spirit of global partnership.
Today, around 23,000 people learn, teach, research, and work on our international campus. In research and teaching, administration and operations, we are strongly committed to the goals of sustainability, climate justice, and climate neutrality. Our Bremen spirit is expressed in the courage to try new things, in supportive cooperation, in respect and appreciation for each other. With our study and research profile and as part of the European YUFE network, we assume social responsibility in the region, in Europe, and in the world.
The university is family-friendly, diverse, and sees itself as an international university. We therefore welcome all applicants regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion/belief, disability, age, sexual orientation, and identity.

As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female employees in science, women are particularly encouraged to apply. In the case of equal qualifications, women are given priority, unless reasons relating to the person of a competitor prevail.
