New Ideas for Postdoc Support

Support for researchers in the early stages of their careers was the focus of a meeting of the nationwide University Association for Early-Career Researcher Qualification in Germany (UniWiND). The meeting was organized by the Bremen Early Career Researcher Development (BYRD) center.

The meeting was attended by over 70 members of the UniWiND (“Universit?tsverband zur Qualifizierung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses in Deutschland”) postdoctoral support network – advisors who design and organize services for postdocs, such as workshops, coaching, and counseling, at graduate centers and similar institutions at German universities. Imke Gir?mann and Maren Droste planned and organized the meeting under the leadership of Dr. Mandy Boehnke, Vice President for International Affairs, Academic Qualification, and Diversity.

The program included a wide range of presentations under the title Research Culture. For example, Dr. Anneke Meyer, Head of National Research Funding at the Leibniz University Hannover, spoke about new ways of evaluating research, and Jutta Stahl, Professor of Differential Psychology and Psychological Assessment at the University of Cologne, addressed the topic of “Abuse of Power in Academia and Options for Action” in her presentation.

In addition, workshops and a World Café provided space for dialogue on how the working conditions of postdoctoral researchers can be improved.
