Data Journalist Starts Residence Fellowship at the DataNord Project

As part of the DSC's DataNord subproject, Serafin Arhelger will be working as a data journalist in residence over the coming months to share practical skills in communicating data-based research and to promote exchange between researchers and data journalists.

Data journalism provides an important link between research and society. By presenting data-based research in a factual and comprehensible way, complex issues can be communicated to a broad audience in an interesting and captivating manner. Thus, data journalism contributes to promoting transparency and social exchange, as well as the responsible use of data.

The Data Journalist in Residence Fellowship (Oct.-Dec. 2025) of the DataNord project (the Data Competence Center for the Bremen Region) aims to promote collaboration by sharing the expertise of data journalists with researchers. As part of the DataNord subproject of the Data Science Center, data journalist Serafin Arhelger will provide researchers with practical skills in communicating data-based research. Serafin Arhelger has been working in the field of data journalism for many years. Since August 2022, he has been part of the NDR Data Team where he prepares public data in ways that make it accessible and understandable for the general public. You can find out more about Serafin Arhelger and his work as a data journalist here.

During his residence fellowship at DataNord, Serafin Arhelger will use different formats to demonstrate what preparations are necessary to make research data and study results accessible and usable, both for academic publications and the general public. Upcoming events include an interactive learning workshop on data journalism methods as well as a Data Story about his work as a data journalist (more information here). In addition, Serafin Arhelger will offer “consultation hours” for individual advice during his fellowship. More information on the different events will be available here shortly.

We wish Serafin Arhelger an enriching and interesting time during his fellowship at DataNord and look forward to his contributions on the topic of data journalism.
