Workshop – Assessing sex/gender diversity: Insights from the DIVERGesTool research project

Adequately capturing sex/gender diversity remains a challenge in health research. The DIVERGesTOOL toolbox aims to support researchers and is currently being disseminated through teaching, lectures, and workshops.

The adequate assessment of sex/gender diversity remains a key challenge in quantitative health research. In response to the growing need for appropriate instruments, the DIVERGesTOOL research project was conducted between 2020 and 2023. In collaboration with coordination partners from Humboldt University of Berlin and the Radboud University Medical Center, the department of social epidemiology developed a toolbox to support researchers in assessing sex/gender in quantitative health studies.

Currently, the toolbox is being disseminated through teaching, lectures, and academic events. On 25 July 2025, Sophie Horstmann from the department of social epidemiology was a guest in Greifswald.

As part of the InkE project (Inclusive Excellence in Medicine), a dynamic workshop on approaches of sex/gender assessment was organized. Here the toolbox was used as a basis for shared discussions. In a lively exchange among all participants, current approaches to assessing sex/gender diversity, the potential of an intersectional perspectives, and possible methodological challenges were explored and critically discussed.

We would like to thank the InkE team and all participants for an exciting workshop.
