Support
DAAD
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) awards annual scholarships for stays abroad of 8 to 12 months to students of all subjects. You have to find a place to study abroad yourself.
Further information is available from the DAAD and the International Office.
Study abroad grant
As a rule, students can receive educational support for one year when studying abroad. You are entitled to funding if
- the education abroad is conducive to the level of education (basic knowledge from at least one year of study in Germany),
- sufficient knowledge of the language of the country and the language of instruction can be demonstrated and
- the stay abroad lasts at least six months or, in the case of university cooperation and internships, at least three months.
As the financial requirements for a stay abroad can be higher (travel costs, tuition fees, foreign supplement) than for studying in Germany, students who are not entitled to BAf?G for their studies in Germany may also be entitled to BAf?G abroad. Questions and answers on funding abroad can be found on the BAf?G pages of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
You should apply for funding abroad at least six months before the start of your trip at the relevant education funding office. The addresses of the relevant international offices can also be found on the above-mentioned pages.
Educational loan
Support through an education loan is independent of the assets and income of the applicant and their parents. A loan application must be submitted to the Federal Office of Administration.
Further information can be obtained from the Federal Office of Administration.
