(AKAD31) Selling America: American Dreams, American Myths and German Migration, 1683-1965

This course examines migration to America in general, and German migration specifically, in relation to the concept of “The American Dream”, and its influence over the motivations of migrants. Means of migration, immigration law and policy, and the influence of migration and immigrant communities on the development of American national identity will also be discussed.

Course material will be in German and English; discussion language will be English.

Dieser Kurs untersucht die Migration nach Amerika im Allgemeinen und die deutsche Migration im Besonderen in Bezug auf das Konzept des ?Amerikanischen Traums“ und sein Einfluss über die Motivationen der Migrant*innen. Auch Migrationsmittel, Einwanderungsrecht und -politik sowie der Einfluss von Migration und Einwanderergemeinschaften auf die Entwicklung der amerikanischen Nationalidentit?t werden besprochen.

Das Kursmaterial wird auf Deutsch und Englisch gehalten; die Diskussionssprache ist Englisch.

    Week 3:   Myth 2, “The Beloved Land”: German religious refugees in colonial America

    Week 4:   Migration by sailing ship and the redemption system

    Week 5:   The Business of Migration

    Week 6:   Myth 3, “The Land of Opportunity”: Kleindeutschland, New York City

    Week 7:   Nativism, Know-Nothings, and German immigration before the U.S. Civil War

    Week 8:   Myth 4, “A Land of Freedom”: slavery and the American Civil War

    Week 9:   German immigrant workers and the American labor movement

    Week 10:   Migration by steamship

    Week 11:   Immigration and the Ellis Island system, 1892-1921

    Week 12:   Immigration restriction, 1891-1929

    Week 13:   Myth 5, “A Land of Rescue”: Jewish German migration, 1930s

    Week 14:   German immigration after 1945.
