First Call for Ideas Published by the InnovationsCommunity Urban Health (ICUH)

The transfer project InnovationsCommunity Urban Health has launched its first Call for Ideas on the topic of heat-adapted urban development. The initiative is seeking creative and practicable project ideas.

The Department of Social Epidemiology is part of the new transfer project InnovationsCommunity Urban Health (ICUH), which focuses on promoting health, equity, and climate adaptation in urban development. The project's goal is to effectively translate scientific knowledge into practice.

The central aim is to bridge so-called "implementation gaps"—in other words, to understand why widely supported concepts such as environmental justice or sustainable urban development often fail to be realized. In collaboration with partners from academia and local government, innovative solutions will be developed and tested in real-world laboratories.

With the launch of the first Call for Ideas, ICUH is now looking for creative and practice-oriented project proposals for heat-adapted urban development in the federal state of Bremen and the Ruhr region. Funding will be provided to collaborative initiatives that aim to contribute to the socio-ecological transformation of cities. A second Call for Ideas in 2026 will focus on the topic of active mobility. In addition to financial support, participants will benefit from in-depth professional exchange and an active innovation network.

The ICUH joint project is implemented in Bremen by the Institute of Public Health and Nursing Research (IPP) at the University of Bremen and the State Association for Health and Academy for Social Medicine Lower Saxony Bremen (LVG & AFS). The cooperation partners in the Ruhr region include Bochum University of Applied Sciences (Department of Health Sciences), TU Dortmund University (Urban and Regional Planning), the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, and the North Rhine-Westphalia Centre for Health (LZG.NRW).

The InnovationsCommunity Urban Health is funded as part of the DATIpilot initiative by the Federal Ministry of Research, Techology and Space (BMFTR) with a total of five million euros until 2028. Of this, approximately three million euros are available for the implementation of innovative project ideas.
