Team from the University of Bremen Wins Justus-Liebig Moot Court at the University of Giessen

The students Claudius Maximilian Dirks and Arap Ali Yilmaz of the University of Bremen have won the 14th Justus Liebig Moot Court, which was held as a nationwide student competition at the University of Giessen on 23 and 24 July 2025.

This is the first time in the history of the Justus Liebig Moot Court that the prize for the winning team, worth €1,500.00, has been won by a team of the University of Bremen.

The Justus Liebig Moot Court is held annually as a simulated civil law court proceeding and is addressed at law students from the fourth semester onwards from all universities in the Federal Republic of Germany. This year, four teams of the University of Bremen qualified for the oral hearings. The eight teams that submitted the best written briefs were invited to the oral rounds in Giessen. In addition to the winning team, a second team of the University of Bremen consisting of Julia Olszewska and Angelina Kleefeld qualified for the semifinals, having defeated another team from the University of Bremen in the quarterfinals. The Bremen semifinalists were awarded a book voucher worth €200.00.

The teams were supervised by attorney-at-law (NY/Germany) Dr. Sandra Gerdes, LL.M., who is supporting the Moot Court teams of the University of Bremen for many years. The Bremen teams were additionally supported by the second coach and study center staff member Tobias Pinkel, LL.M.

The Justus Liebig Moot Court involves the drafting of a written memorandum for a fictitious court case. Each team is drafting either the statement of claim or the statement of defense. In the first oral round in the quarterfinals in Giessen the case heard is the same case as the case used for the memoranda. Here, the winning team of this year's competition competed against the team from the University of Konstanz and prevailed.

For the semifinals, a new case is issued on the afternoon of the first day of the competition, which the teams can prepare overnight. In the semifinals, Claudius Maximilian Dirks and Arap Ali Yilmaz prevailed against a team from the University of Marburg. Afterwards, a new case was provided for the finalists, which must be prepared within one hour. Here, the team from the University of Bremen competed against the second team from the University of Marburg and prevailed again.

All hearings were held before a three-member panel. The semifinals and the final were chaired by Federal Court of Justice judge Prof. Dr. Patrick G?dicke. The further judges were attorney-at-law Tanja V. Pfitzner, LL.M., representative of the Frankfurt Bar Association, and Prof. Dr. Martin Gutzeit from the University of Giessen.

The faculty of law warmly congratulates all students and coaches of this year's Justus Liebig Moot Court teams of the University of Bremen to their successful participation in the competition.
