Unlock the Future – ‘Bildungsgerechtigkeit - Schlüssel zur Zukunft’
Travelling exhibition highlights research findings across Bremen and Bremerhaven
The exhibition "Unlock the Future", based on the qualitative open acces study "Expedition Bildungsgerechtigkeit" by Professor Sabine Doff, is currently touring various locations in Bremen and Bremerhaven. Following its ceremonial openings — with guests ranging from students and teachers from the participating schools to Sascha Aulepp (Senator for Children and Education in Bremen) and Hauke Hilz (School Commissioner of the Magistrate of Bremerhaven) — the exhibition is now open to the public.
Designed by the Bremen-based agency GfG / Gruppe für Gestaltung, the exhibition uses digital and interactive elements to make complex connections in the field of educational justice tangible. An interactive quiz invites visitors to explore key aspects of educational justice, while QR codes throughout the exhibition offer direct access to practical insights from the participating schools.
After its premiere at the Bremerhaven Public Library, the exhibition is now on display at the Haus der Wissenschaft Bremen from June 13 to August 6. In parallel, the Wall-Saal at the Bremen Public Library showcases a companion photo exhibition as part of the research project under the leadership of Gesine Born.
In summer 2025, the travelling exhibition will continue its journey through the participating schools in Bremen, allowing even more students and educators to engage with its findings.

Final event of the Erasmus+ project ‘Integrating Language, Literacy and Subject Teaching in Plurilingual Education Contexts’ (ILLS-PEC)
On 3 June, the final event of the Erasmus+ project ‘Integrating Language, Literacy and Subject Teaching in Plurilingual Education Contexts’ took place at the Max-Planck-Gymnasium in Delmenhorst. During the hybrid conference, which was attended onsite and online by teachers and researchers from many different countries, best practice examples from Spain, Poland and Germany were presented. The keynote speech was given by Prof. Dr Teresa Ting (University of Calabria, Italy), who outlined the neuroscientific foundations of subject and language learning in a very lively manner.

Dissertation by Dr. Nelli Mehlmann was published
The research project ?Also ich fand, es war eine gute Idee, mal über die anderen Sprachen zu reden.“ Wie Schüler:innen den Einbezug individueller Mehrsprachigkeit im Englischunterricht erleben (?Well, I thought it was a good idea to speak about the other languages.“ How students experience the integration of plurilingualism into EFL-classes) explores the question how students experience the integration of their linguistic repertoires by means of a plurilingual teaching unit in EFL-classes at a German secondary school.
Various studies illustrate that the students’ language repertoires are only rarely used as a resource in EFL-classes at German schools. Connected to this, there exists only little empirical research on how other languages can be included into the process of teaching and learning English as a foreign language, and how the students involved in this process experience this specific approach. Taking this as a starting point, this PhD project firstly aims at designing and conducting a plurilingual teaching unit that integrates the learners’ languages into EFL-classes with the help of language comparisons, language portraits and plurilingual role-plays. Secondly, semi-structured interviews are conducted with the participating students in order to explore their individual views on this experience.
The dissertation project was conducted by Dr. Nelli Mehlmann under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Sabine Doff (University of Bremen) and Prof. Dr. Lukas Eibensteiner (Friedrich-Schiller-Universit?t Jena). It was recently published in the series ?SFS – Studien zur Fremdsprachendidaktik und Spracherwerbsforschung" by WVT.
