Attacks on the Freedom of Research and Teaching - Resolutely Against!

On 5 February 2025, the "Fachgesellschaft Geschlechterstudien" (Gender Studies Association) published a statement in which it emphasised the inviolability of academic freedom. This is not only enshrined in the German "Grundgesetz", but is also a fundamental human right and inextricably linked to democracy. The association draws attention to the threat to this freedom faces due to the statements made by Alice Weidel, who announced at the AfD party conference on 18 January 2025 that all gender studies institutions would be closed. Such statements are not only unconstitutional, but also deeply anti-democratic. Attacks on academic freedom in relation to gender studies could be extended to other disciplines and pose a serious threat to democracy. The association emphasises the importance of the autonomy of science and universities for the future viability of democratic societies. Attacks on academic freedom are attacks on democracy itself.

You can find the full statement on the website of the FG Geschlechterstudien.

Successful for the Fourth Time in the Professorinnenprogramm 2030 - With Distinction!

The “Equality Concept for Parity” submitted by the University of Bremen as part of the Professorinnenprogramm 2030 (federal and state program for female professors) has impressed the independent review panel. The University of Bremen now has the opportunity to apply for up to three start-up grants for the initial appointment of women to permanent W2 or WE professorships.

Of the 92 higher education facilities selected, 22 received special recognition: their equality concepts were rated best by the committee in light of the respective, specific situation and in terms of type and size, and they were awarded the title “Gleichstellungsstarke Universit?t" (university with high equality). Among the 22 award winners are nine universities, including the University of Bremen! The award also comes with the opportunity to create an additional position for a young female researcher, which should lead to a permanent professorship—a new feature of the Professorinnenprogramm 2030.

In parallel with the funds for scientific staff, the projects developed in the equality concept to promote equality between female* students and female* scientists can now be continued, such as BIG (Bridge Between Internationalization and Gender), perspektive promotion, summer universities for women* in MINT subjects, go d!verse- gender- and diversity-sensitive personnel selection.
