Our BYRD Mixer is a great opportunity to connect with fellow doctoral researchers, especially for newcomers, and share experiences about PhD life in Bremen, all in a relaxed and friendly setting. The BYRD team will be there as well, happy to answer any questions you may have about pursuing your doctorate at the University of Bremen. Prof. Dr. Gesine Mollenhauer and Prof. Dr. Klaus Schlichte were awarded the Prize for Outstanding Doctoral Supervision 2025
Congratulations!
On Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at 5 p.m., the award ceremony for outstanding doctoral supervision took place in the Campus Space of Sparkasse Bremen. With around 70 guests, Prof. Dr. Gesine Mollenhauer for the natural and engineering sciences and Prof. Dr. Klaus Schlichte for the humanities and social sciences were honored for their excellent supervision achievements.

01.10.2025: Deadline for Applications for "BremenIDEA – Research stays abroad"
Doctoral researchers of the University of Bremen can apply for funding for one- to three-month stays at universities and research institutions abroad. These must be related to the candidate’s doctoral project.

Doctoral researchers can apply for support of activities that clearly contribute an added value within the context of their PhD, such as participation in summer schools, research sojourns at renowned institutions, additional experiments, interdisciplinary projects or international cooperations.
Postdocs can apply for supplementary funding of research projects in order to prepare applications for third-party funding, to set up conferences in Bremen or to undertake interdisciplinary research. As an added incentive for researchers, grants are available in particular for the preparation of first applications for DFG funding as well as cooperations with scientists at the University of Oldenburg.

Cooperation agreement signed between the Graduiertenakademie Oldenburg and BYRD
New: Courses for postdocs included
We have been cooperating with the Graduiertenakademie of Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg since 2016. Since then, doctoral candidates from Bremen have been able to take advantage of the courses offered by the Graduiertenakademie free of charge. On April 30, 2025, the cooperation agreement was renewed - from now on, postdocs from Bremen can also benefit from the workshops in Oldenburg!
And of course: Thanks to the cooperation agreement, doctoral candidates and postdocs at the University of Oldenburg can take part in all our BYRD offers free of charge. A warm welcome!
